For people who do not believe Jesus Christ was who he said he was, guess what lies in store...

Drop Dead: Unbelievers

Okay, this is the solemn stuff: what happens to those who turn away from God and reject Jesus Christ...

1) When an unbeliever dies, their spirit goes to the underworld: 'hell'.

Now a lot of people do not want to admit that 'Hell' exists, such as those who prefer the idea of reincarnation - but since a place called  hell is mentioned repeatedly throughout the scriptures even by Christ  himself, I suspect it must be real. The Protestant Bible translations do not talk about 'purgatory' but that's an issue for another time.  Here

are some references to hell:

2 Peter 2:4 "For God did not spare angels when they sinned but sent them to hell. putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgement."

Matt. 5:22 Jesus said "But anyone who says 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell."

Luke 16 contains the story about the rich man who died: "The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus (who had also died) at his side. So he called to him 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water & cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' But Abraham replied 'Between us and you a great chasm has been fixed so that those who want to go from here to you can not, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'

(This is a vivid picture of the separation of the believer and the unbeliever after death, before the time of Christ...it is one of several mentions of a place called Hades where people go immediately upon their death.  This is where Christ descended to after his death where he took out the believers and they went to heaven/paradise.)

2) After the Rapture, Tribulation & 1,000 year reign of Christ on earth, unbelievers will receive their resurrected body and go to judgement.
Romans 14:10 "We will all stand before God's judgement seat." (Paul quotes Isaiah's prophecy about how 'every knee will bow, every tongue will praise God, then he says) "...So then each of us will give an account of himself to God."

Look in Revelations 20 again, it says: (v. 11) Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it... I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.."

Daniel 12:2 "Many of those whose bodies lie dead and buried will rise up, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt..."

3) After this judgement, unbelievers are condemned to a second death in the lake of fire

Revelations 20:12-15 "And I saw the dead, the great & the small, tanding before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened which is 'the book of life'; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death & Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. And death & Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."
