Susan Gore Gardner
Susan Gore Gardner has been creating affectionate landscapes of the South, portraits of its wildlife and unique images of musicians for over 37 years. Susan found her calling when in college her life-long love of drawing led her to become a professional artist. She embarked on a career of exhibiting her artwork in art festivals and gallery exhibits throughout the Southeast. Her artwork has been selected for inclusion in juried gallery exhibits at the Salmagundi Club in New York, Galerie Triangle in Washington DC, and in Georgia galleries including the Ann Jackson Gallery in Roswell, S. Brown Gallery in Buckhead, Downtown Gallery in Cartersville, Gallery 4463 in Acworth, and the Dallas Courthouse Gallery in Dallas.
In 1990 Susan encountered the medium of soft pastel. A remarkable opportunity arose to study privately with nationally known painter Robert Meredith, who helped her refine her artistic vision and whose influence led to an evolution in style and subject matter. During her early days of working with pastels, music became a powerful source of encouragement and inspiration. In seeking to better understand this influence, Susan began a series of musician portraits. She photographed her first live concert in 1992 and since then has produced an ongoing series of musician portraits based on her own concert experiences. These portraits have been featured in several solo art shows in Georgia, including:
‘Blues to Bluegrass’ at the Harris Art Center in Calhoun, in conjunction with the annual String Band Festival
‘Behind the MUSICians – Susan Gore Gardner’ solo exhibition of musician portraits at Gallery 4463 in Acworth
"Susan Gore Gardner - A Retrospective Exhibit Celebrating 35 Years in Art" solo at the Dallas Courthouse Gallery in Dallas
"From Rock to Bluegrass: Musician Portraits" a solo exhibit at the Carrollton Cultural Art Center in Carrollton.
Susan’s musician portraits have provoked many smiles, initiated wonderful music-oriented conversations and garnered numerous awards. Her portrait of friend and guitar advisor George Gruhn now hangs at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville, Tennessee where she goes to research instruments. Tony Sims’ portrait was chosen Best in Show at the Paulding Fine Art Association’s Juried Fall Art Competition in 2014. Portraits of Paul Martin, Bruce Jeansonne, and Brian Cameron have won awards at juried art shows.
Marty Stuart’s portrait was awarded 3rd Place in the prestigious Southeastern Pastel Society’s 2013 Members Show, and Juror’s Choice at the Artist Guild of Northwest Georgia’s Fine Art Competition in 2015. Susan will always remember with delight watching Marty’s expression the first time he saw the portrait. He selected it plus Susan’s portraits of his Fabulous Superlatives band (Kenny Vaughan, Harry Stinson, Paul Martin, and new bass player Chris Scruggs) as well as Leroy Troy’s portrait, to become part of the country & bluegrass music museum he is building in his hometown of Philadelphia, Mississippi.
THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT ON MUSICIAN PORTRAITS: “You’ve been there…
The house lights dim, stage lights brighten, and the touch of fingers to strings coaxes tone, rhythm and soul that connect with the heart of the listener… a singer and song unite to express feelings that everyone recognizes as their own…Connections are made. Spirits are lifted. And for a moment in time we know we’re not alone on this long road.”
Susan’s artwork may be viewed at the historic Courthouse Gallery in downtown Dallas Georgia, and the Downtown Gallery in Cartersville, Georgia.
